For parents with a child on the spectrum and for parents with children who may have some behavioral challenges, these books are insightful and readily accessible. I hope they are of help to you.

ParentSpeak: What's Wrong with How We Talk to Our Children - And What to Say Instead by Jennifer Lehr

This book really touches upon how Shifting Communication Style is effective for families, and offers great insight as to why it is important. It's a great book that gives really good examples of what not to say, such as phrases like “good girl” or “good boy.” Instead, it encourages us to give specific praise so that, rather than deeming a child good or bad, we spotlight specific choices and highlight what was good and what wasn’t.

Uniquely Human: A Different Way of Seeing Autism by Barry M. Prizant, PhD.

Prizant really approaches autism in a much more humanistic, whole-person light. He really looks at the whole child and helps dismantle misconceptions about who an individual with autism is.
